Racism, Prejudice, And Stereotyping - 850 Words
Racism, prejudice, and stereotyping are major issues in America. Racism is defined as ââ¬Å"a set of beliefs that oneââ¬â¢s own racial group is superior to other groups (Benokraitis, 2014, p. 185). The existence of racism comes hand to hand with hate groups. Hate groups are an organized group of individuals who demonstrates hatred against people of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other designated sector of society. One particular hate group that I would like to explore is ââ¬Å"World Church of the Creatorâ⬠. ââ¬Å"World Church of the Creatorâ⬠is a white supremacist group that considers itself a religion found on the proposition that the white race is ââ¬Å"natureââ¬â¢s highest creation (ADL- World Church of the Creator, 2001). Hate groups have been around for many years, and donââ¬â¢t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. According to an article in the Washington Post, hate groups have rose for the first time in 2015. Just last year, ââ¬Å"a year characterized by levels of polarizationâ⬠, there was a 14% spike in hate groups. Hate groups are a danger to everyone because you never know who is participating in hate groups or if you are a target of a hate group. Religion hate groups are not as popular today, as the Ku Klux Klan and Black Separatist groups. The WCOTC is a religious hate group that has been around since the 1973 and still exist today (Chokshi, 2015). The WCOTC was found and lead by Ben Klassen. By the 1990s WCOTC was one of the fastest growing hateShow MoreRelatedStereotyping: The Nature of Prejudice1539 Words à |à 7 Pageslot of people understand and have gone through stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Team America Essay Example
Team America Essay Team America satirises almost every convention of an action movie, Americas political views, and the all important American actors who set themselves up as key spokespeople on world events. It does this by exposing the debateable issues and flaws, and ridiculing them. The films main focus is Americas blind view of the rest of the world and the USAs Global responsibility, a quotation taken from neo-conservative statement. In fact, the main aims in the neo-con statement are that America must accept its global responsibility and vital roles in maintaining peace and security in the rest of the world. The quotation from Team Americas logo: World Police refers to the countrys views. The film highlights Americas arrogance and how they think that theyre the world leader and they can resolve anything. However, in the first scene of the terrorists in Paris, Team America arrive in their flashy helicopters with the American flag embedded in everything, and they end up blowing up half of the town and telling everyone that everything is bon. Team America share the same views as the neo-conservatives but the film mocks them. This can be seen when the news reporter is reading the news about Team Americas world policing in Cairo, and the Film Actors Guild, especially Alec Baldwin.Team America has stereotypical representations of practically everything, from a group of terrorists speaking a language which seems to consist of about five words, to a young French boy with an ice lolly singing Frere Jacques. These stereotypes have problems and powers. The powers are that they are easily recognisable, and they can be humorous because essentially, they are just using exaggeration. However, people may take offence to stereotypes. The use of stereotypes could again, show Americas arrogance on how they see the rest of the world. This is also shown in the languages spoken, e.g. the French boy singing Frere Jacques and the terrorists saying Muhammad and jihad all the time.Another ironic fea ture in Team America is the use of puppets. It is ironic because the film has adult themes and topics, yet the producers decide to use puppets which are for children. By using puppets Team America goes against the Hollywood view that everything needs to be as realistic as possible. Also, the puppets could satirise the lack of talent in Hollywood actors. The lyrics from the non-diegetic music are of particular interest. The son Freedom Isnt Free could be similar to the American governments views on freedom, and Garys speech where he says he doesnt want the guilt, could be the views of an average American citizen. Also, the song America, Fuck Yeah! has the word America repeated constantly followed by fuck yeah which again shows Americas greatness and all of Americas ironic brands and views such as Wal-Mart, democrats, and Taco Bell. The puppet fight scene contains ironic non-diegetic music which is an example of incongruity. It has some fsat-paced music which builds tension then becomes very lively and energetic. It is a clichà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ of action movies and it is funny in Team America because the puppet fight is unrealistic, yet there is serious music in the background. The film has many different tools to make it funny such as parodies and intertextualities. Team America uses clichà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½s from action movies such as Top Gun and Armageddon, however the film satirises them to them funny. An example of this could be the classic establishing shot of the team walking towards the camera in slow motion. It is an iconic shot because it makes the team look like heroes by using a low angle shot and dramatic music, however in Team America it is ironic because the team arent heroes, although they think they are.Team America also mocks the bad-guy which every action film has, with the Korean dictator called Kim-Jong-Il. One of his main scenes is of the mass murderer singing a song about how ronery he is. This is another example of irony. Also, Kim-Jong-Il uses the stere otypical Asian pronunciation of the letter R. This is ironic because the only letter not in the Korean language is R, so instead of saying ronery he should be pronouncing the L correctly but mispronouncing the R, for example loundhouse instead of roundhouse.Team America doesnt just satirise Hollywood movies, it also mocks the actors. In the movie there is a group of actors called F.A.G. who set themselves up as important spokespeople on world events. This is satirised when Janeane Garafolo says As actors, it is our job to read the news and say it as if its our opinion. What this implies is that famous American actors take it upon themselves to tell the world news, as if they have a global responsibility.Team America does not only parody movies, it also parodies a popular musical called Rent. The scene where Gary first appears is of him performing in a play called Lease. The song being performed is called Everyone Has AIDS, which satirises Rent because some of the characters suffer f rom AIDS.To conclude, I think that Team America is a very successful satire because it is so unique and it satirises conventions of action movies and it mocks Hollywood actors who we may look up to, and of course, it mocks America.

The Nominative Case - Learning Latin
The Nominative Case - Learning Latin In Latin (and many other languages) the Nominative Case (cà sus nÃ
minà tà «vus) is the subject case. There is nothing very tricky about it- that simply means that the Nominative form is what is used in a given sentence as a subject. When you look up a noun (in Latin noun is nÃ
men which is traditionally defined as a part of speech that names persons, places or things) in a Latin-English dictionary, the first form listed is the Nominative Singular. The same is true of pronouns, which stand in place of nouns and adjectives (modifiers of nouns and pronouns), both of which are also subject to declension. In English, some words are only used in the plural, but these are few and far between. The same is true in Latin. For the vast majority of Latin nouns, the first form you see in the dictionary is the Nominative Singular, followed by an ending for the genitive, and the gender of the noun. (Note: What you see following the initial word is slightly different for adjectives and pronouns.) Nominative Singular Example: Puella (1) Dictionary form: Puella, : The girl is good - Puella bona est. Nominative Plural and Paradigms As is true for the other cases, the Nominative Case can be used in both the singular and the plural. For puella, that plural is puellae. Traditionally, paradigms put the Nominative Case at the top. In most paradigms, the singulars are in the left column and the plurals in the right, so the Nominative Plural is the top right Latin word. Nominative Case Abbreviation Nominative is usually abbreviated Nom or NOM. Since there is no other case beginning with an n, it can be abbreviated N. Note: Neuter is also abbreviated n, but neuter is not a case, so there is no reason to be confused. Nominative Forms of Adjectives Just as the dictionary form of the noun is the Nominative Singular, so it is also for the adjectival form. Usually, the adjectives have a Nominative Singular masculine followed by either feminine and then neuter, or just neuter in words where the masculine is also the feminine form. Compare:(3) Noun: puella, -ae girl(4) Adjective: bonus, -a, um good This adjective dictionary-style entry shows that the masculine singular of the Nominative Case is bonus. The feminine singular of the Nominative Case is bona as was shown in the example about the girl (puella bona est.) An example of a third declension adjective showing the masculine/feminine form and the neuter is: (5) Finalis, -e - final Nominative With To Be Verbs If you were to use the sentence The girl is a pirate, both the words for girl and pirate would be nouns in the Nominative Singular. That sentence would be puella pirata est. Pirate is a predicate nominative. The actual sentence was puella bona est where both the noun for girl, puella, and the adjective for good, bona, were in the Nominative Singular. Good is a predicate adjective.
